Conservative MP Mr Gerald Howarth.

Mr Gerald Howarth, Conservative Member for Aldershot, told PA News: "The fact that top brass in Brussels want a rerun is conclusive proof that the EU is a one-way ratchet and that they are not interested in the democratic process.

"They are simply interested in creating a European superstate and it will be an absolute scandal which will strike at the very foundations of the legitimacy of the EU if the Irish people are required to try again so they can achieve the 'right' result."
