The Tánaiste presents the film star with his Certificate of Irish Heritage which recognises the depth of Tom's Irish ancestry, stretching back to the time when the family settled in Ireland as Knights of Strongbow. Other research has revealed the last Irish-born antecedent of Tom Cruise was Patrick Russell Cruise who lived in Malahide, Co Dublin, in the early 1800s.
