Dublin - The leadership of a new East Timor organisation dedicated to dialogue with the illegal Indonesian occupiers of the former Portuguese colony has appealed to the United Nations for protection against an order for their arrest, reports David Shanks.

Mr Manuel Carrascaloa, president of the Movement for Reunification and Unity of the People of East Timor, appealed to the UN Secretary General's special envoy to East Timor, Dr Jamsheed Marker, when Dr Marker visited the capital, Dili, at the weekend, according to the Portuguese news agency, Lusa.

Governor Abilio Osario Soares recently ordered the arrest of the leadership saying that they must face "the risks" of opposing Indonesian authority.
