The Centre for Independent Living, in Thurles, which helps those with disabilities to lead independent lives, has won this year's European Helios II Programme for Social Integration award. The centre has 20 personal assistants under the control of the disabled. Programme manager, Mr Jim Casey, said: "The role of the personal assistant is to assist not to provide care or assert authority".
