Three years for Cork sex attack

A Cork man has been jailed for three years for sexually assaulting a woman

A Cork man has been jailed for three years for sexually assaulting a woman. John "Flick" McCarthy (23), James Street, Mitchelstown, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the assault on June 1st, 1996, in the town.

Sgt Kieran Barry said the victim "was shattered for life". Her social life had become almost non-existent. For nearly six months after the attack she would not leave her house because everyone in the town knew what had happened. She felt ashamed.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said he had to take the evidence of gratuitous violence into consideration. The victim had recounted her fear of being killed. The court was being confronted with an increasing number of cases of men committing sexual crime while influenced by alcohol and drugs.
