Three men were being treated in hospital last night following two so-called punishment shooting attacks in different parts of Newtownabbey on the outskirts of north Belfast.

The attacks happened within 10 minutes of each other after 7 p.m. The first shooting happened at Tynan Drive, Monkstown, where a man was shot in the leg. At 7.20 p.m. on the Doagh Road, two men were attacked and shot in the legs. So far no one has admitted responsibility, but loyalist paramilitaries are suspected.

A local Ulster Unionist Party councillor, Mr William Johnston, deplored the shootings.
