A third man has been arrested in connection with a fatal assault on a man in Dundalk on Wednesday.

A third man has been arrested in connection with a fatal assault on a man in Dundalk on Wednesday.

The victim, Niall Dorr (18), died in hospital last night as a result of head and facial injuries sustained in the assault, which took place on Castle Road between 9 and 9.20pm.

The 30-year-old man detained today was arrested in Dundalk this afternoon. Gardaí are also continuing to question two men - aged 21 and 23 who were arrested yesterday in connection with the incident and are being held at Dundalk Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1884.

Gardaí were yesterday investigating claims Dorr had been beaten with an implement, possibly a bar, but sources said he did not have any injuries which showed signs of having been inflicted with a weapon.

Mr Dorr, who was due to celebrate his 19th birthday next month, went to St Mary’s College in Dundalk, and recently completed a post-Leaving Certificate course in art at O’Fiach College.

A postmortem was carried out earlier today.
