Assistant manager Phil Thompson has launched a staunch defence of his boss Gerard Houllier following Liverpool's worst run of league form in 50 years.

Houllier is coming under increasing pressure to end the club's miserable run of eight games without victory - last suffered in the 1952-1953 season when they were relegated from the top flight.

Liverpool's task could even get worse before it improves, with Sunday's trip to champions Arsenal followed by the New Year's Day game at Newcastle.

"People should remember what Gerard has done to bring this club up to the position it is in now," Thompson told reporters today.

"Before there was nothing, whereas now there is Champions League football. Manchester United, who beat us regularly, have been beaten five times in six games.

"We couldn't beat our great rivals Everton and we have now laid that to rest with a long unbeaten run.

"Gerard has done all this and brought trophies back to this football club. It all shouldn't be pushed aside for six weeks of disappointment.

"Everybody wants to be successful and I just urge the fans to stick with us because Gerard is the right man here at Liverpool Football Club."

Liverpool's Highbury plans have been hit by injuries to two of their key players.

Striker Emile Heskey misses the game following a recurrence of the ankle injury that sidelined him recently, while keeper Jerzy Dudek - recently dropped in favour of Chris Kirkland - has also been ruled out with a back problem.
