The Teachers' Union of Ireland has acknowledged that the Minister for Education and Science has made concessions by promising "compensatory teaching staff" to deal with a shortage of teachers in the VEC sector.

Following a meeting with Mr Martin last night, TUI general secretary Mr Jim Dorney said 2,000 teaching hours had been lost following the recent appointment of 500 new assistant principals to take on administrative duties.

"Many schools now face a crisis with this loss of teaching hours, causing time-tabling chaos and cutbacks in the teaching of important subjects," he said.
