Banking reform and economic challenges will be discussed today by political leaders from both sides of the border.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny will chair the 14th plenary meeting of the North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) in Farmleigh in Phoenix Park, Dublin.
First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness will lead the northern delegation, which will include members of the Northern Ireland Executive who will meet with members of the Republic’s Cabinet.
Mr Kenny said he was looking forward to hosting the event.
“These regular meetings provide an impetus to advancing critical north south projects and much needed all-island economic co-operation,” Mr Kenny said.
“We will have a detailed discussion on the economic challenges facing all parts of this island, including banking reform, fiscal challenges, Nama (National Asset Management Agency) and the broader impact of the crisis in the euro zone.”
In addition, there will be a full discussion of progress across a range of areas of north south co-operation including research and innovation, the North West Gateway Initiative, co-operation on tourism and agriculture, and the work of north south bodies.
“One week after the Olympic Torch has travelled from Northern Ireland to Dublin, I am looking forward in that spirit to a positive and constructive meeting,” Mr Kenny added.
