Colombo - Sri Lankan air force raids and heavy rebel casualties stalled a push by Tamil Tiger rebels to recapture their former stronghold of Jaffna town, military officials said yesterday.

A government statement issued in Colombo said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were firing artillery and mortars at densely populated locations of Jaffna town, the cultural capital of their would-be homeland.
