Divers in Co Mayo yesterday recovered the body of a young man from a remote mountain lake

Divers in Co Mayo yesterday recovered the body of a young man from a remote mountain lake. He got into difficulties while swimming last Sunday.

Alan McNeely (27), was drowned at Stoney Lake near Bangor Erris in northwest Mayo, situated three miles from the nearest road in very difficult terrain.

His girlfriend, Charlene Barrett, had rung the emergency services on Sunday to report that he was in trouble. She was asked later by the crew of a Coast Guard helicopter to light a fire so they could pinpoint her location

After an intensive search his body was recovered shortly before 10am yesterday.
