A heroin addict who committed a spate of robberies in a five-month period has been given a five-year suspended sentence by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Wayne Kelly (18), of Monasterboice Road, Crumlin, pleaded guilty to a number of counts of robbery, attempted robbery and larceny at various newsagents, shops and video stores in south Dublin between November 1999 and April 2000.

Garda Ronan Laverty told the court Kelly was on bail at the time each offence was committed. Judge Patrick McCartan said Kelly had represented a great threat to the people he robbed and would serve the sentence if he committed an offence during the next seven years.

He placed Kelly under a bond to be of good behaviour. Judge McCartan said Kelly must also continue to attend Coolmine Therapeutic Centre.
