Up to 80 students at New Ross Vocational College, Co Wexford, walked out yesterday to protest at inadequate heating in the school.

The protest, which took place before the start of classes, followed problems with a new heating system, which had been installed in the school over the summer.

Mr Tom Dunlop, deputy principal at the 300-pupil school, acknowledged that approximately six of the 21 classrooms had experienced teething problems with the new system.

However, he said, students returned to their classrooms after the school bought oil-fired heaters for the classrooms in question.

Mr Dunlop said he was confident that the problems with the new system would be repaired in the coming days.
