Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2006.

The 20-year-old, who broke into the first team earlier this season, had one year to run on his previous deal.

Mellor was handed his debut by boss Gerard Houllier against Ipswich in the Worthington Cup and scored his first goal against Sheffield United in the semi-final.

"The manager came to me about a month ago and said he was pleased with the way I had been progressing and also said that the club wanted to offer me a new contract," Mellor told the club's official website.
