State gives £1.9m to UN food aid

The Minister for Agriculture, Mr Walsh, yesterday announced a contribution of £1.939 million to the World Food Programme, the UN food aid organisation.

He said the sum includes the State's contribution under the 1995 Food Aid Convention and an additional voluntary contribution to the work of the World Food Programme.

The voluntary contribution will be used to assist the efforts of the World Food Programme in fighting world hunger in southern Sudan, Somalia, the Great Lakes region of Africa and North Korea.
