Sri Lanka's main opposition party has presented a no-confidence motion against President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government.

Sri Lanka's main opposition party has presented a no-confidence motion against President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government.

The resolution comes two days after defections by the main Muslim party left the ruling People's Alliance with a minority.

The United National Party's resolution is on the grounds that the government "cannot solve the pressing problems of the country and its people".

Ninety-eight of the 116 opposition members signed the motion.

There was, however, no immediate threat of the government falling as party leaders must first decide when to debate the motion, and then put it to a vote.
