MADRID - The Spanish Prime Minister, Mr Felipe Gonzalez, denied yesterday that governments had been involved in a "dirty war" against Basque separatists as early as 1976.

His denial contradicted claims made on Thursday by members of his ruling Spanish Workers' Socialist Party that conservatives were involved in their own dirty war from 1976.
