Baikonur, Kazakhstan - Russian engineers, equipped with huge mechanical calipers, hauled the first module of the International Space Station onto a launch pad in Kazakhstan yesterday in preparation for take-off on Friday.

The Zarya module is to provide power and communications facilities for the new space station, which is to receive its first human occupants in January 2000.
