An explosion at South Korea's Agency for Defence Development has killed one person, while injuring five others, an official said.

The explosion occurred during artillery testing at a shooting range in the state-run institute, Kim Young San, a spokesman for the nation's Defense Acquisition Program Administration, said by telephone today.

Local media reports earlier said three people had been killed and at least 60 injured.

The site is 45 km (28 miles) northwest of Seoul and about 30 km from the heavily defended border with North Korea.
