Woman (75) dies after being struck by Garda car

A woman has died in hospital after being struck by a Garda car in Dublin this morning.

The 75-year-old, named locally as Elizabeth Core, pedestrian was taken with injuries to Tallaght Hospital by ambulance following the collision in Clondalkin, Dublin 22.

In a statement this afternoon the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) said the woman had died in hospital.

The incident is being investigated by GSOC. The collision between the pensioner and the marked Garda car took place shortly before 11.30am after which the Garda watchdog was called.

A team of GSOC investigators attended the scene of the incident at the junction of Fonthill Road and St John’s Road.

Diversions were in place around the scene of the crash.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said it wished to express its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the woman who was fatally injured.

It said that as thematter had been referred to GSOC for investigation it would not be commenting further at this time.

GSOC asked that anyone with information contact it on 1890-600800.

The watchdog currently has 11 investigations open concerning road traffic incidents involving gardaí.

In May a 43-year-old woman died when the car she was a passenger in crashed as it was being followed by a Garda car in Fairview, Dublin.

At the time there were concerns as GSOC had not been informed of the crash until some 5½ hours after it happened even though GSOC has 24-hour on-call arrangements for such referrals.

In that case the crash scene was examined by Garda personnel, the car taken away and the street furniture made safe before the case was referred to GSOC in an apparent breach of protocols governing investigations into the death of any person at or around the time of being in contact with the Garda.
