THE MOST treacherous stretch of road in Co Sligo has been marked by  29 crosses, one for every fatality there, by local residents calling for urgent action.

Bernie Mulhern, spokesman for the N4 Action Group, said yesterday the metre-high crosses were having an effect just 24 hours after being erected.

“The crosses are a very stark reminder to people who are shocked that so many lives have been lost on such a short stretch of road.”

He  said  people were slowing down on the notorious stretch of road when they saw the crosses on both sides between Castlebaldwin and Cloonamahon.

“We estimate 29 people died in the last 35-40 years but already we have learned of other tragedies where people died weeks or months after being involved in accidents there,” he said.
