Trade union Siptu said it will resist the closure of aircraft maintenance firm SR Technics and that it intended to do its utmost to try to save more than 1,100 jobs after the firm announced it will pull out of Dublin.

Branch organiser Pat Ward said the union told senior management the union would "resist closure".

"We intend using the 30-day consultation process to the utmost to try and save these jobs," Mr Ward said after the meeting with chief executive Bernd Kessler and other executives today.

Mr Ward said: "We pointed out that we had been through crises before with [previous owners] FLS and Team Aer Lingus, but management had always been prepared to roll up their sleeves with us and tackle the issues. We said we were prepared to do so again and asked them to join us in saving the plant."

He said Mr Kessler had indicated there may be "pockets of work available" and that the company would look at that option.

"We made it clear we were not there to discuss redundancies, that generations of workers in north Dublin had depended on the aviation industry for a livelihood, the decision to close was wrong and that we would use the 30 days consultation period [with unions] to do our utmost to save the jobs."

The Unite trade union which represents over 400 of the 1,135 workers who will lose their jobs at the aircraft maintenance group SR Technics said it was shocked and disappointed at the company's decision to close.

Regional organiser Willie Quigley said: “This is a devastating blow for workers and their families who have been employed in some cases for over 30 years in aircraft maintenance at the airport.”

“We will meet with management early next week to see whether alternative survival plans can be investigated. We believe that this move straight away to closure is too extreme in the context of existing contracts which the company holds at Dublin Airport.”

“We have been assured that the pension schemes are fully funded and secure.”
