The drug abuse issue should be made part of the agenda for any talks on a new national agreement to succeed the Programme for Competitiveness and Work, the national executive of SIPTU has said following its monthly meeting at the weekend.

Mr Paul Clarke, an assistant national officer of SIPTU who has been working closely with community groups and the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, said yesterday that the union was fully committed to ensuring the Government adopted an integrated approach to the drugs problem. There were no easy solutions but the consequences of inactivity were even costlier.
