Shuttle bus starts in Phoenix Park

A shuttle bus service has started operating in Dublin’s Phoenix Park transporting visitors and workers around the 712 hectare open space.

The service began today and will operate every half and hour, seven days a week on a circular route starting and finishing at the park’s main entrance on Parkgate Street near Heuston Station and the Luas line.

It will take in all the main features of the Park including Dublin Zoo, the Visitor Centre, the Papal Cross, Farmleigh and St Mary’s Hospital.

The Phoenix Park the largest urban enclosed park in Europe.

Minister of State at the Department of Finance Noel Ahern formally launched the service this morning. He said the buses were low emission LPG-powered vehicles

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful amenity as the Phoenix Park on the doorstep of the city, so I would urge everybody to leave the car behind, get on board our buses and discover, in comfort, the many features of the Phoenix Park for yourselves”, he said.

Mr Ahern also noted that a new playground, which also caters for children with disabilities, has opened near the Phoenix Park Visitors’ Centre. He also announced that a bike-hire facility had been put in place in the park.
