Two people escaped injury when shots were fired through a front window.

The gun attack happened in Marian Square, Clara, Co Offaly, at 11pm last night.

Gardaí said two people were in the rear of the house at the time and were not injured.

Investigating officers are appealing for information, especially about a car that was seen leaving the area.

Gardaí believe there may be a link between the shooting and the discovery of a burnt out car in nearby Ballycumber.

Meanwhile, a controlled explosion was carried out by an army bomb disposal team after a viable device was discovered close to the halting site in Dunsink Lane, Finglas.

The scene was declared safe at 1.40am.

Investigations are continuing.
