Shots fired after car strikes officer

Police in Northern Ireland fired at a car after the vehicle struck a female officer following a collision with a patrol car.

At around midnight a Peugeot 406 hit a patrol car at Summerhill Road and Thornhill Crescent, Twinbrook, in west Belfast.

When the officer left the car she was hit by the Peugeot and suffered a hand injury, cuts and bruising. A second female officer is being treated for shock. Both were taken to hospital.

Police discharged one shot at the vehicle, which was found to contain a small amount of suspected drugs. The driver made off on foot.

Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson's office is investigating.

The female officer struck by the car was taken to hospital with an injury to her hand, cuts and bruising. A second female officer was treated in hospital for shock.
