Good record

A Galway judge declared this week that prosecuting restaurants for selling alcohol on Good Friday would be "ludicrous" and "ridiculous".

Judge Mary Fahy said that while the State and Garda were technically correct in bringing prosecutions against nine restauarants, she wasn't going to record a conviction. "If people want to go out for a meal on Good Friday I would have thought they could have a drink with their meal."

Clean sweep

Westport, Co Mayo won the Tidy Towns competition for the third time this decade, scoring 303 points out of a possible 400 and pipping Birdhill,Co Tipperary by just one point.

Birdhill,though, was named Ireland's tidiest village; Kenmareis our tidiest small town and Ennisnabbed the prize for Tidiest Large Urban Centre.

A special award was presented to Glenties, Co Donegal for its outstanding contribution to the competition over 50 years.
