Hundreds of people from offices near Donegall Quay have been evacuated, and a fire brigade spokesman said they were treating the leak as a major incident.

He said a large volume of gas had escaped and was staying in the area. Firefighters said workmen using a digger struck the gas main on Donegall Quay.

Gas engineers are working to isolate the leak and are using water spray to prevent a possible explosion.
