A second man has been charged in connection with last December's £26.5 million Belfast bank robbery.

Martin Gerard McAliskey (42), a self-employed salesman of Ballybeg Road, Coalisland, Co Tyrone, appeared before Belfast magistrates charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The accused is understood to have been arrested and questioned last week in connection with the Northern Bank robbery. He is accused of making false statements to police concerning the purchase, possession and sale of a white Ford van.

A policewoman told the court she believed she could connect the accused to the charge.

Mr McAliskey was remanded on his own bail of £1,000 to appear again before the court next month and was instructed to report weekly at Dungannon police station.

Last week a 23-year-old Co Down man became the first person to be charged in relation to the robbery. Dominic James McEvoy of Mullandra Park, Kilcoo, was remanded in custody for four weeks.

He faces charges of illegally detaining bank official Kevin McMullan and his wife, Karen; possession of a gun or an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and robbery of the Northern Bank.

Three other men were last night being questioned by police in connection with the robbery.

Two other men who had been arrested recently for questioning have been released.
