A second man has died after a fall from a cliff in Co Donegal on Sunday.

A second man has died after a fall from a cliff in Co Donegal on Sunday.

Alan Gallagher (19), from Clyhore, Ballyshannon died in hospital this morning after falling from a dangerous precipice at the Smugglers Creek Inn at Rossnowlagh.

His friend Niall Anderson (21), a painter, also from Ballyshannon died at the scene.

They are thought to have slipped on the grass and slid down a steep slope for about 13 metres before falling another 13 metres on to the beach below.

It was reported locally that the tragedy occured when one of the men slipped and the other tried to grab hold of him causing both men to go over the edge. A third person who was with them raised the alarm at 7.00 am.

The area where the tragedy happened is a popular beauty spot and is marked by a sign warning the public not to go close to the cliff edge.

Mr Gallagher, a student at Maynooth, was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he was put on a life support machine. He died in the early hours of this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The pair were reported to have been on a night out with friends in Bundoran and had gone to party at a house in Rossnowlagh afterwards. They were thought to have been waiting for a taxi when the accident happened.
