SERVICES of Remembrance and wreath laying ceremonies were held at several locations throughout Northern Ireland yesterday.

The Northern Secretary, Sir Patrick Mayhew, laid a wreath on behalf of the British government at the Cenotaph in the Garden of Remembrance at Belfast City Hall. The civic service was led by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Cllr Ian Adam son, and was attended by the Northern Ireland GOC, Lieut Gen Sir Rupert Smith.

In Dungannon, the SDLP chairman of the local council, Mr Vincent Currie, became the first nationalist chairman to lay a wreath at the remembrance ceremony. He said he decided to do so as he wished to identify with the relatives of all those who had lost their lives in conflict over the years.

In Lisburn, Lady Mayhew, wife of the Northern Secretary, laid a wreath, and at Carnmoney, Co Antrim, a wreath was laid by the Northern Ireland Attorney General, Sir Nicholas Lyell.
