An Post has been forced to scrap plans to use electric scooters around Dublin – because the vehicles were not suitable for delivering mail.

The eight Italian-made Cargo Scooters were used during trials around the city centre. They were bought for tens of thousands of euro but were recently sold for a fraction of the price.

The scooters, which had both front and rear carrier boxes, were kitted out in the colours and logos of An Post during the test trials. However, a spokesman for the company said the bikes were not suitable to be used for mail deliveries.

Similar scooters, made by Italian company Oxygen SPA, are currently used by more than 1,500 employees of Swiss Post.

Roger Roulston, a businessman from Letterkenny in Co Donegal, has put a reserve price of €1,500 on each of the scooters.

“I bought them on the internet from a guy who was acting on behalf of An Post. He told me they were originally bought for €10,000 each. “
