The Boyle Medal award is presented after a rigorous consideration by an international panel of scientists. The panel includes scientists whose expertise is relevant to the research of shortlisted candidates and individuals who have experience in assessing the merits of world-class scientists.The judging panel included:

Enric Banda (Chairman):Born in Girona, Spain, he received a PhD in physical sciences at the University of Barcelona. He has completed decades of research into geological processes within the Earth's crust and is author and co-author of over 160 scientific publications. He has been Spain's secretary of state for research, is on editorial boards of scientific journals and has won many international distinctions.

Sir Leszek Krysztof Borysiewicz:Born in Cardiff, he is a physician researcher specialising in viral immunology and infectious diseases. He was knighted in 2001 for vaccine development including a vaccine against cervical cancer. A Fellow of the Royal Society, he is chief executive of the UK Medical Research Council and has served as the governor of the Wellcome Trust. He is also a founding Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Sir John Savill:A medical doctor and clinical researcher with a PhD, he has degrees from Oxford, Sheffield and London. After holding the chair of medicine at Nottingham, he moved to Edinburgh as professor of medicine, where he set up and became the first Director of the University of Edinburgh/ MRC Centre for Inflammation Research. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal College of Physicians.

Dorothy Guy-Ohlson:From Sweden and a specialist researcher in palaeontology and palaeo-environment, she was chair of the Committee of Geosciences of the Swedish Natural Science Research Council. Currently a director of Quality & Quantum International Research Evaluation, Stockholm, and scientific adviser to Interface Europe, Brussels. She worked for seven years in DG Research and has served on many research evaluation committees.

Günther K Bonn:From Innsbruck and an analytical chemist, he is vice-president of the Austrian Council for Science and Technology Development, Vienna, and is a former member of the Austrian Science Foundation. He has held senior academic positions including head of department in both Austrian and US universities and has 250 publications and 11 patents to his credit. He is on the editorial boards of a number of leading journals.

Peter Jeavons:Professor of Computer Science at Oxford University, he is interested in algorithms and computational techniques in biology. The author of more than 60 papers, he originally trained as a teacher before spending time designing superconducting magnets. He completed his PhD at Royal Holloway before moving to Oxford as Reader, then Fellow in computer science before assuming the professorship there.

Dervilla M X Donnelly:Emeritus Professor of Organic Chemistry, University College Dublin, she chairs the Council of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the Audit Committee of the National Museum of Ireland. She is a member of the Royal Irish Academy, and is the International member of the Austrian Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. She is a past president of the Royal Dublin Society and a former member of the Irish Times Trust and Board.
