victory procession at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The German led from start to finish, with the exception of two pit stops, for a record-equalling 51st career victory.

Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello was next home and the one-two finish ensured Ferrari their third constructors' title in a row.

David Coulthard, whose title hopes had hung by the slimmest of threads, finished third for McLaren.

Schumacher's win, on a sweltering afternoon at the Hungaroring, equalled France's four times champion Alain Prost's career record of grand prix victories and was Ferrari's 142nd since 1951.

The statistics told the story on a humid afternoon of limited thrills and minimal overtaking.

Schumacher's championship was as good as sealed when Coulthard failed to punch past him off the grid or even maintain his position.

The Scot had talked of going for the slightest gap after qualifying alongside his rival but instead allowed Barrichello to steal past into the opening corner and close the door.

Coulthard led briefly when Schumacher pitted but he had to wait until his own 32nd lap stop before he could take second place for real.

His challenge did not last long, however, the Scot losing the advantage on his second pit stop when he took more than a second longer than Barrichello.

He emerged from the pit lane just as the bright red Ferrari swept past.

Schumacher sailed on untroubled, and his biggest scare had come before the start when his cold rear brakes locked and he skimmed the gravel on a warm-up lap.

Mechanics replaced one of the car's turning vanes on the grid as a precautionary measure.

It was another disappointing day for Jordan as Trulli yet again failed to finish and new signing Alesi could only manage tenth as he struggled with the unfamiliar car.
