Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is quitting international football ahead of Demark's friendly match against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin next Wednesday.

"After nearly 14 fantastic and eventful years as a Danish international I have sadly taken the decision to end my international career," the 37-year-old Schmeichel said in a statement today.

The former Manchester United player, who helped the Premiership Champions to five league titles in the 1990’s and the historic treble in his last season in 1998/99, added that he would now concentrate on his club.

He is currently contracted to Portugal’s reigning champions Sporting Lisbon until the end of the 2001-02 season

Schmeichel won a record 128 caps for Denmark, the highlight coming in 1992 when they beat Germany in the final to win the European championship.
