The sheer scale of the Omagh bombing had left reporters and photographers stunned, according to the cathaoirleach of the Irish executive council of the National Union of Journalists, Mr Michael Fisher. Acknowledging the call by the Northern Secretary, Dr Mo Mowlam, for the media to respect the privacy of the bereaved, he said journalists had endeavoured to ensure their activities did not add to the distress of the people of Omagh.
