Saudi television today showed a Briton, a Canadian and a Belgian, confessing to two bombings in the kingdom which killed one Briton and injured several other people, including an Irish woman.

A man who identified himself as Mr Alexander Mitchell, a Briton, said he and the Canadian man, named as Mr William Sampson, carried out the bombing which killed Mr Christopher Rodway and injured his wife on November 17th in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

"I confirm and confess that I received orders to carry out the bombing here in Riyadh on November 17th against Christopher Rodway, a British citizen. William Sampson, a Canadian, helped me carry out the bombing," Mr Mitchell said according to an Arabic voiceover of his remarks.

Mr Mitchell said he was involved together with Mr Sampson and the Belgian man in the second bombing on November 22nd which injured three Britons and an Irish woman. The other two men also spoke of their involvement.

Mr Mitchell did not say who the orders for the bombings came from. Saudi interior minister Prince Nayef said on television before the apparent confessions were aired that the kingdom knew who was behind the bombings and would reveal further details at a later stage.
