San Francisco could be the first city to offer its workers free sex change operations, a local paper reported today.

San Francisco could be the first city to offer its workers free sex change operations, a local paper reported today.

Starting July 1, pending final passage by city supervisors and the mayor, the city will being covering sex change operations, hormone treatments and other trans-gender procedures for its municipal employees.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the benefits will come out of the city's health insurance fund. The city's supervisors and the mayor are said to be in favor of the measure.

The sex change assistance has been five years in the making. It adds to a list of other benefits city workers and residents enjoy in this liberal US city, including a law dictating that companies provide benefits for a same-sex partners and strict rules against discriminating against fat people.
