A sailor who was injured during an attempt to cross the Atlantic is being towed back to shore by the coastguard.

The man was stranded 80 nautical miles off the south west coast after sustaining an injury to his ribs.

He was travelling from the Azores to the UK when he was injured.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard said the alarm was raised shortly after 9am when the man reported that he was unable to control his vessel due to his injuries. The coast guard said the man's vessel is being towed back to shore this evening.

The Castletownbere lifeboat and an Air Corps surveillance plane attended the scene. The Irish navy vessel LE Aisling assisted in the operation.

"The yacht is being towed by the lifeboat back to Castletownbere at a rate of seven knots," said the Coast Guard.

"The weather is not great out there, but at the rate they are doing they should be in by 2.30am.

"We still haven't ascertained the man's injuries on board, but he does not seem to be too badly injured."
