More safety measures should be put in place at the base of construction cranes to prevent people from climbing onto them, an inquest jury has recommended.

The inquest into the death of a Galway man, Mr Frannie Miller (31), recommended that greater safety measures be put in place after hearing how he fell to his death from a 100 ft crane in Galway Docks last April. Mr Miller, a father of three children from the suburb of Mervue, who had consumed the equivalent of seven pints of beer, spent several hours on top of the crane. He was watched by a large crowd, before he fell to his death. Garda Supt Tony Finnerty said the authorities had done everything possible to try to get Mr Miller down safely.

Mr Miller, who was separated, had rejected pleas from a number of people to come down from the crane.
