A Rwandan Roman Catholic priest wanted on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity has left Italy after giving himself up to the international tribunal for Rwanda.

It is claimed Fr Athanase Seromba was involved in Rwanda's 1994 genocide of militiamen known as Interahamwe.

Fr Seromba (37) changed his name to Don Anastasio Sumba Bura while in Italy and was attached to the church of San Mauro in Florence until his surrender, Internewssaid.

Fr Seromba arrived in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, where the UN tribunal sits, last night. Court spokesman Mr Kingsley Moghalu said Fr Seromba would make a first appearance in court soon.
