NEW DELHI – Salman Rushdie has cancelled plans to appear at an Indian literary festival in Jaipur following protests from Muslim clerics and warnings that he could be targeted for assassination for blaspheming the Prophet, reports from New Delhi.

Rushdie says he cancelled his trip after being informed that “paid assassins” from the Mumbai underworld might be on their way to eliminate him.
