RTE will be allowed to supply content to Sky digital television under a deal approved today by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.
The BCI said the programmes broadcast on all services will exactly mirror those broadcast terrestrially.
Speaking at the signing of the contract today, Mr Conor Maguire, the BCI chairman said, the commission is looking forward to concluding a similar contract with TV3 in respect of their service within the next week.
