US:An RTÉ documentary about New York police life could decide the fate of the first person facing the death penalty in New York in more than 50 years.

A jury at the sentencing of double police killer Ronell Wilson have been shown a 20-minute interview recorded by Dublin's Graph Films for RTÉ, in which one of the victims, Det James Nemorin, spoke about his fear of dying on the job.

Wilson gunned down Det Nemorin and his partner, Rodney Andrews, while they were carrying out an investigation into illegal guns on Staten Island in 2003.

Prosecutors are now seeking Wilson's execution, using RTÉ footage to persuade the jury of the seriousness of the murder.

The 2002 documentary, NYPD Green, was shot as a four-part series on the lives of Irish Americans in the New York police department.

In the documentary, Det Nemorin talked about the difficulties of the job and how he feared for his family if he were ever killed on the job.

The 24-year-old Wilson was convicted of the double murder last month.

The jury continues deliberating on Wilson's sentence on Monday.
