London - Cardinal Basil Hume (76) has been appointed to the prestigious Order of Merit. The appointment, by Queen Elizabeth as a special mark of honour, is conferred on individuals of exceptional distinction. Cardinal Hume, Archbishop of Westminster, who is seriously ill with cancer, said he was "deeply touched" and saw the honour as "a recognition of the part played" by Catholic "laity, clergy and bishops in the life of the nation".
