CONTINUING problems of water pollution in the Connemara village of Roundstone have forced Galway County Council to improve a replacement supply to more than 200 households in the area.

Now the local authority has also had to put in place a relief supply on the smallest of the Man Islands, Inis Oirr, because, as in Roundstone, faecal bacteria in the form of E coli have been found in the local supply after samples were taken by the Western Health Board.

In Roundstone, the council has introduced a mobile tanker which is serving housing estates in addition to two stationary tanks located in the village. These were introduced last week after a number of people complained of being ill after consuming tap water.

The council has declined to indicate the cause of the pollution of the supply which comes from Erulallagh lake.
