Roma have lodged an appeal with UEFA about the referee of their controversial match against Liverpool on Thursday with a view to forcing a replay.

The Italian league leaders have lodged an official complaint, claiming that Spanish referee Jose Maria Garcia-Aranda had awarded them a penalty kick in the fourth round second leg UEFA Cup tie, only to change his mind and give a corner.

Television replays of the match appear to support the Italians claim. Roma won 1-0 at Anfield, but lost 2-1 on aggregate.

A UEFA spokesman has confrimed that a protest hasbeen lodged but explained no decision can be reached before next Tuesday.

"We have received notification from Roma that they are protesting against the result. Obviously that means they want the game replayed," he told a British newspaper.

"The matter will be considered by our disciplinary body on Tuesday."

Roma's appeal is unlikely to succeed according to the spokesman, who added: "If the referee has changed his mind on a decision he is perfectly entitled to."
