Dresden - Two nights of rioting in Dresden, which left 18 police officers injured, was probably linked to trouble at the EU summit in Gothenburg, German police speculated yesterday. A Dresden police spokesman, Mr Siegfried Wolf, said anarchists from outside the city, mostly from Berlin, were responsible for the worst of the violence.

It began after a punk concert on Saturday and flared up again on Sunday. Mr Wolf said the slogan "Dresden sends its greetings to Gothenburg" was discovered scrawled on one building. Several streets were badly damaged in the riots.
