A report commissioned by Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform Michael McDowell on the costs charged to consumers by the legal profession will be published today.

The Legal Costs Implementation Advisory Group was set up in 2005 to examine the legal costs charged to consumers by solicitors and barristers.

The group looked at ways of introducing a transparent fees structure and achieving better value for money.

The State is attempting to cut the rate of daily payments to the Mahon tribunal barristers, who are paid €2,250 a day, while junior counsels can earn €1,500.
